‘Plastic bag, wrapper recycling bill heads to Illiniois House’

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois lawmakers are pushing for a statewide plastic bag and wrapper recycling program, the first of its kind in the country.

The bill, sponsored by state Rep. Michael Tryon, R-Crystal Lake, requires plastic bag and wrapper manufacturers to establish collection sites within 10 miles of Illinois residents in 90 percent of counties by 2014.

“We could do nothing and recycle 2 percent of our bags next year, or we could put in a statewide program and make it to 13 percent,” said Tryon.

‘Study: Medicaid cuts would hurt Illinois economy’

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

SPRINGFIELD — Two health-care advocacy groups are predicting thousands of job losses and billions of dollars in economic damage to Illinois, if Gov. Pat Quinn’s plan to conjure $2.7 billion in savings from the Medicaid program is implemented.

Quinn’s plan would jeopardize 25,615 jobs and cost the state’s economy $3.2 billion, according to a report released Wednesday by the Illinois Hospital Association, which lobbies for Illinois hospitals, and the Campaign for Better Health Care, an organization that advocates for health-care access

“Drastic Medicaid cuts hurt everyone, not just the Medicaid patients. Hospitals will be forced to reduce jobs. Local businesses will be impacted,” Illinois Hospital Association President Maryjane Wurth said. “And hospitals will be forced to cut or eliminate medical services that everyone uses — there is not a separate set of staff, equipment and facilities just for Medicaid patients.”

‘Audit: Overhaul workers’ comp system for Illinois workers’

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois’ Workers’ Compensation Program has “numerous shortcomings” and is “ill designed to protect the state’s best interests,” according to a state audit released Wednesday.

Auditor General Bill Holland’s report urges lawmakers to change the program for state employees because of “extensive problems.”

Between 2007 and 2010, state workers filed 26,101 workers’ compensation claims with more than half from the state Departments of Human Services and Corrections.

Peoria Pundit: Attorney: Dan Irving was set up by his ex-wife

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

According to Irving’s attorney, Dan O’Day: “This case only started when Amy Irving wanted to get out of a marriage to re-unite with a person she has had previous relationships with. Amy Irving created a scorched earth attack and did everything in her power to publically attempt to destroy the character and integrity of my client in order to justify her actions. Once she divorced Dan Irving on December 5, 2011, she got engaged to her old sweetheart on December 7, 2011.”

Peoria Station: The EJ&E Had a Brief History in the Peoria Area

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

It would be a stretch, but you could say the EJ&E is back!

March 31 marked the 32nd anniversary of the court-ordered liquidation of the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad Co. The day after the Rock Island entered its death throes, and for a few days afterward, competitors and friendly connections provided service to customers that would otherwise have been cut off from the nation’s rail network.

Perhaps one of the most unusual operations was that of the Elgin Joliet & Eastern Railway. The day following the Rock Island’s shutdown, the US Steel-owned belt line began operations on the Rock’s east-west mainline from Joliet to Bureau Jct. thence down to Peoria. Also operated was the Kellar Branch.

Widmer’s Peoria Watch: New Zoo Entrance and Parking Lot

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

I blogged in error that I saw no progress at the zoo new entrance and parking lot. The Barton financed project is well underway. My lame excuse is that I only play on the tennis courts and did not drive the perimeter of the park or I would have noticed. I did note the removal of two tennis courts which will limit tournament play this summer. However, 7 clay courts, unusual for a community this size, and also 4 lighted hard courts are available in upper and lower Glen Oak Park.
