Welcome David P. Jordan to BlogPeoria

Saturday, September 20th, 2008

If you follow Peoria blogs, you probably recognize David P. Jordan. He’s an expert on transportation issues, and posts comments here and at Peoria Chronicle quite frequently. He’s written several guest posts at the former Peoria Pundit site and also ran a blog here.

He’s decided to start blogging here at the Blog Peoria Network. His new site is called “Peoria Station,” and he has two posts up already. He’s going to be at Peoria Railfair 2008 all weekend, so stop by and say “hello.”

How to change lurkers to blog participants

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

The summary to this fine article:

In most online communities, 90% of users are lurkers who never contribute, 9% of users contribute a little, and 1% of users account for almost all the action.

And the bad news: These numbers are not going to change much, no matter what you do. All bloggers can do is not get in the way.

And make no mistake, you WANT people to contribute. A blog isn’t a blog unless there is two-way communication between readers and the blog author. All we can do is not get in the way when that 0 to 1 percent do want to0 contribute. Make commenting easy. Don’t turn off your spam filters and moderation queues, but check them often and rescue trapped comments. Toss up a harmless poll every once in a while.
